Alternativa Baazar - Mother's Day

Click the image

In early April I was invited by the psycho-pedagogue, Ana Maria de Souza Rossetto,
to attend in the Bazaar Alternativa that  happened in  May 6th and 7th.
I extend the invitation to a dear potter friend, Vicente Cardia.
The Alternative Bazaar is aimed at integrating young people and adults with intellectual disabilities and
/ or emotionally maladjusted, enabling them to work and participate meaningfully in the social group in which they live.
The Alternative has developed a series of workshops: Carpentry, weaving, leather, ceramics painting, mosaic, pyrography, etc., aimed at professional training. The result is a beautiful work, very well finished with excellent quality, which were exposed for sale in this bazaar. There is also an onlinecatalog where any of the products can be purchased at any time.
There are several ways to help this nice work in addition to donations, volunteering, adoption of a craftsman, donation of materials ... See here.
It was a great honor for me and Vicente to give our modest contribution on this wonderful work.
The bazaar atmosphere was special. It's not every day that we can find and meet so many people committed to unconditional love to human beings.
Congratulations to all Alternative team! This kind of action should be the rule.

Tenmoku's Workshop

 Toshiyuki Ukeseki

The Temmoku Glaze workshop was done between April 27 ~ 29 at  ICC- Instituto Cultural da Cerâmica de Cunha. The workshop started with a fast explanation and “hands on” of basic glazes: one transparent, one matte and one white.
Mr. Toshiyuki Ukeseki also spoke and explained his studies and researches about the Yuteki (or hare's fur) and Youhen (or oil spot) Temmoku. Youhen is the word that refers to the blue iridescent, with a blue violet halo and irregular spots in black background, Yuteki has  more regular spots in golden color to silver in a black or pale brown background. We learn how to think about the development of tenmoku glazes using ashes and red earth. This glaze, as high iron content, fired above 1200 degrees celcius will produce beautiful oil droplets during the firing, result of crystallization. We also saw the Gosu composition with iron and cobalt pointed by Mr. Ukeseki.
Some of the tests started to show promising results. It was interesting to observe that we are able to reproduce that nice glazes. And we can not forget that a lot of research and dedication is always necessary. This is the reason why Ukeseki San achieved so nice results during his life researching glazes, and I hope that it will be the same with us, but with the advantage of Mr. Ukeseki point us the right way.
As a plus, we had some explanations about Ancient Chinese and Japanese Pottery with the Architect, Designer and Potter Alberto Cidraes.
Now, is time to take a breath, keep studying and start to practice the knowledge that was given to us!

Cunha is a small city that inspires tranquility and calm, with an ever green sight seen. These days were focused in learning and a lot of talks with Angelina, my travel mate to Cunha, and the opportunity to taste the “Mountains cusine” with Liliane, the Shambala Inn “Chef” that introduced to us some of her most delightful creations.

One of our tours was at Mieko and Mario San atelier. We had the opportunity to know there, a marvelous action to preserve Cunha history and must be supported. Mieko and Mario set a virtual museum that can be visited at www.mecc.art.br.

Professor Alberto Cidraes invited us to visit his beautiful atelier with a medieval ambience. I also visited the pre opening of  Studio Pentagrama; five elements: air, earth, fire, water and spirit. – Five ceramists: Alberto Cidraes , Dalcir Ramiro, Luciano Almeida, Salvador d eRosa and Toshiuky Ukeseki. According Cidraes “the pentagram is the geometric materialization of the “Golden Ratio” found in Nature and in many cultures as the canon of balance in formal creation and composition. The Pentagrama Atelier intends to add even more life at the Alto Cajuru artistic pole.
During our visit at Pentagrama Atelier we listened a musical demonstration with Udus that received the warmest applause.

Another tour and Angelina had the opportunity to know
Jardineiro and Suenaga Atelier. It is a gorgeous place

Above the lovely atelier of Marcelo Tokai and Luciane Sakurada (with her son at picture).
They received us with a delightful tea and a most than welcome pause after so many information minutes before to take the highway back to home.

We experienced three great days.
Thanks everyone!

Aproximadamente ∅ 12  x  h 10 cm. Novos vidrados. Estou nesta busca das sobreposições. gesto e harmonia...

Through the spots and glaze lines,
Like someone who reads poetry, and has insight
A Master inspired by ancient wise
She makes wishes, dreams and ways
A hope, your return one day, just to shine and play...
From who never forgot you, your best friends,
The glazes, wheel and clay.

Predestined Couple

App. 12  x  h 10 cm.

Wait... And completely naked
Dive slow, and they changed the state,
In glaze dressed finally, from hell to rave.
Pot and lid, no sin, just a date.

Espera...E completamente pelados

Just a pot?

App. 12  x  h 10cm.
 Flerte
A.A.

Flirt
A reflection...
The potter frames empty spaces, but a pot is never empty. It can change according the owner's creativity and has the power to introduce itself at everybody routine, so subtle; carrying on marks, traces and thoughts from the potter.
The inside of the pot is quiet, serene and receptive;
the translation of "to contain", "to keep" and "to offer".
Between hands, the secret of ones and the desire of others.
As a physical form manifest, tactile, completely seductive and quietly transforming.

Weaving the Morning

One rooster not weave a morning,
he will always need the other roosters,
one to pick up the shout that he
and toss it to another, another rooster
to pick up the shout that a rooster before him
and toss it to another, and other roosters
with many other roosters to cris-cross
the sun-threads of their rooster-shouts
so that morning, starting from a frail cobweb,
may go on being woven, among all the roosters.

And growing large, becoming cloth,
pitching itself a tent where they all may enter,
inter-unfurling itself for them all, in the tent
(the morning, wich soars free of ties and ropes -
the morning, tent of a weave so light
that, woven, it lifts itself through itself: baloon light.

Tecendo a Manhã

First International Ceramic Artists Meeting at USP

I Encontro Internacional de Ceramistas na USP
I EIC

Tenmoku glaze by Toshiyuki Ukeseki

The 1st International Ceramic Artists Meeting at USP (Sao Paulo University-Brazil) was held March 22nd to 25, 2011, at Auditorium of Architecture and Urbanism College of Sao Paulo University (FAU/USP). Under coordination of Profª Dras. Norma Grinberg,
Cristiane Bertoldi and Sílvia Tagusagawa, had more than 240 attendees. It was a success.
International lecturers are well known at ceramic world.
This meeting, with no precedent in Brazil, promoted important discussions.
It was gone far beyond the simple explanation about techniques. The event provoked reflections, sharings and pointed out new possibilities to the Brazilian Ceramic Art.
Surely the national ceramic and it's proccess of creation will take benefits from the Meeting.

Besides, it was a great time to meet old friends and make new ones too.
I would like to thank you, Profa Norma Grinberg, thank the lecturers and all the staff.
See you on next!
